5 Simple Steps to Prepare Your Furnace for Winter
Although you may not often think about it, your furnace is an important part of your home that you rely on every day when the temperatures outside drop. During the winter months, your furnace works hard to keep your home warm and comfortable. That’s why it’s important to take some time now to prepare your furnace for winter.
Step 1: Check Your Furnace’s Filter
A clean filter helps your furnace run more efficiently and also improves the air quality in your home. To determine if the filter is fine, take a look at it and see if there is any dirt or debris. Usually, you can tell if a filter needs to be replaced if it is dark in color. Also, check to see if the filter is clogged. A good rule of thumb is to replace your furnace’s filter every three months.
If you have a permanent filter, you will still need to clean it on a regular basis. To do so, remove the filter and then wash it with soap and water. Rinse it off completely and then let it air dry before putting it back in place.
Step 2: Inspect Your Furnace’s Blower
Your furnace’s blower helps circulate warm air throughout your home. If the blower isn’t working properly, your home won’t be heated evenly. To inspect the blower, first, turn off your furnace. Next, locate the blower and remove the access panel. Once you have access to the blower, give it a visual inspection to look for any signs of damage or wear and tear. Step 3: Lubricate Your Furnace’s Moving Parts
To keep your furnace running smoothly, it’s important to lubricate its moving parts on a regular basis. This will help reduce friction and wear and tear on the components. To do this, first, turn off your furnace and then locate the moving parts. These include the blower motor, fan blades, and any other parts that move. Once you have found the moving parts, apply a few drops of lubricant to each one. Be sure to use a lubricant that is specifically designed for use on furnaces.
Step 4: Check Your Furnace’s Venting System
Your furnace’s venting system helps remove dangerous fumes from your home. If the venting system is damaged or blocked, it could cause serious problems. To check the venting system, first, turn off your furnace and then locate the vent pipe. This is usually located near the base of the furnace. Step 5: Test Your Furnace
